DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for performing skilled professional nursing services in the care and treatment of patients in a nursing home, long term care facility, institution, a patient's home or in a clinic. This is a professional nursing position requiring a high degree of competence, judgment and specialized skills. Work is performed under the general direction of a supervisory nurse or under the direction of a physician. Work is performed in accordance with standard nursing practice and a prescribed nursing care plan. Depending on assignment, supervision may be exercised over the work of Licensed Practical Nurses and/or related nursing personnel. Certain assignments made to employees in this class will require reasonable access to transportation to meet field work requirements made in the ordinary course of business in a timely and efficient manner. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Depending on assignment, may perform any of the following:

 

Assesses patient nursing care needs and prepares and carries out a nursing care plan.

Observes patient symptoms and carries out diagnostic procedures ordered by a physician.

Gives medication to patients, immunizations or other inoculations, prepares and applies dressings, and performs nursing and therapeutic treatment as prescribed by a physician.

Conducts home visits, which includes reviewing referral information, interviewing clients and conducting physical assessments to determine clients' needs.

Instructs patient or members of patient's family, in regard to patient's nutrition and diet or health habits, and the carrying out of treatments at home and rehabilitative measures as authorized by a physician.

Performs nursing related services for patients in the prevention of illness and the attainment of maximum health.

Refers patients or contacts appropriate social services or health services as needed to assure continuing or follow up care or related services.

Cares for patients by performing such services as giving baths and rubs, lifting and moving patients, keeping order, etc.

Maintains a variety of clinical records related to nursing care.

May perform preliminary physical examinations, including blood pressure reading, urinalysis, blood sampling, etc.

In long term or home care, may perform related services such as caring for the environment, making beds, changing linen, caring for personal effects, etc.

May supervise and orient L.P.N.'s and related nursing personnel in patient care services.

 

WHEN ASSIGNED TO THE ONONDAGA COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT

Participates in public health preparedness activities as trained and assigned.

Utilizes appropriate methods for interacting effectively and professionally with persons of all ages and from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, educational, racial and ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations, lifestyles and physical abilities.

 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Good knowledge of nursing principles and techniques and their relation to medical and surgical practices.

Good knowledge of the materia medica, sanitation, personal hygiene, and nutrition as it relates to health care and maintenance.

Working knowledge of pharmacology (drugs and their actions and reactions.

Working knowledge of the prevention and control of infections and diseases.

Skill in the application of nursing techniques and practices.

Ability to complete and maintain a variety of records including clinical records and accurate patient summaries and charts.

Ability to understand and follow technical instructions.

Ability to administer medications and follow safe medication policies.

Ability to practice proper infection control policies and procedures.

Ability to carry out therapeutic measures as prescribed.

Ability to get along well with patients, physicians and others.

Ability to plan and supervise the work of L.P.N.'s and related personnel

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Graduation from a school of nursing approved by the State Education Department,

from a course approved as qualifying for Registered Professional Nurse.

 

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT

 

Possession of a current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in

New York State within one (1) year of appointment.

 

When Assigned to Onondaga County Health Department:

 

Possession of a current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State at time of appointment.
